OneLink expands smart home wares with mesh Wi-Fi system & smart doorbell

First Alert OneLink Tri-band mesh node

First Alert is doubling down with several new products in its OneLink line of smart home devices, including an updated version of the Safe & Sound, a new whole-home Wi-Fi mesh system, and a smart video doorbell.

On the heels of the newly updated second-gen smart carbon monoxide and smoke detector, First Alert is at CES 2019 showing off several new pieces of hardware.

First is the Onelink Surround Wi-Fi System which is similar to other mesh routers but a few added features. It prioritizes security by creating its own private network to detect malicious attacks. "The technology scans every outbound connection from the network to analyze URLs and IP addresses to detect malicious traffic and infected machines," says One Link.

Users can also pause the internet, set rules and time limits, and filter content through the accompanying app.

Unique to the FirstAlert line, if a connected smoke or CO alarm detects something, the Wi-Fi system can push an alert to all screens in the home.

The base package includes two ceiling-mount Onelink Safe & Sound alarm units that are hardwired and one base node that connects directly to your home's router. A standalone unit is also available with multiple nodes and both tri-band or dual-band options.

As mentioned, the new Wi-Fi system works with a new second-generation Safe & Sound model that builds the mesh functionality into the already multi-purpose device. First Alert also reaffirmed AirPlay 2 support will be arriving very soon. That means the Safe & Sound V2 will act as a speaker, Alexa assistant, a some detector, a CO alarm, and a Wi-Fi mesh node.

The third new device is the OneLink Bell, yet another smart video doorbell. It ties into other OneLink products but otherwise seems a fairly standard 1080P HD video doorbell with motion alerts and two-way audio. By integrating with devices such as the Safe & Sound, no additional chimes are necessary to hear the doorbell throughout the home. Unfortunately, OneLink Bell won't support HomeKit initially.
