08/10/2016, 04:08 pm
Microsoft has demonstrated why the FBI's desire for "Golden Key" backdoors allowing "good guys" to bypass security is such a bad idea: it inadvertently released its own keys to Windows tablets, phones, HoloLens and other devices using UEFI Secure Boot.

During its March 21 press event, Apple was keen to market the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro as a Windows PC replacement, pointing out that most 12.9-inch Pro buyers are switchers. But does the smaller Pro stand a chance of luring more converts?
03/24/2016, 06:03 pm
It's not surprising that Apple has incorporated the new features first introduced last fall for its 12.9 inch iPad Pro to its new 9.7 inch iPad Pro--essentially making it an enhanced iPad Air 2 packing an A9X brain, quad speakers and support for the new Apple Pencil and Smart Connector. What is surprising is that in just six months, Apple has enhanced the iPad Pro with an iPhone 6s-class camera with True Tone flash, and has invented a new "True Tone Display" for adapting the screen to ambient lighting--a substantial investment in iPad as a platform.

Across Apple's fiscal 2015, annual iPad unit sales fell by an astounding 19 percent while iPad revenues fell 23 percent, a plunge from fiscal 2014 of just over $7 billion. The tech industry pundits love to talk about the failure of Apple's tablet business, but are short on the specifics of what's happening. Here's why.

When Apple first unveiled iPad Pro, it noted that its custom designed A9X chip would be faster than 80 percent of the PCs that shipped this year. Benchmarks indicate that it's not just faster than low end generic PCs, but also faster -- and less expensive -- than Microsoft's Surface Pro 4.

Microsoft's latest efforts to shove Windows PCs back into relevance in the Post PC era have found willing volunteers among some PC bloggers ready to exchange their credibility for enthusiastic reviews of Surface Book and Pro 4, apparently under the premise that Windows can be reanimated back into a viable monopoly via hybrid Tablet PC-style convergence.
