Apple's demand for flash memory is proving insatiable in the run-up to new iPods, according to one report. Also, Samsung has developed technology that could increase the processor speed of future Apple handhelds.

As flash memory and solid state drives become the new standard, Samsung and Toshiba have struggled to sell their latest high-capacity 1.8-inch hard disk drives, perhaps signaling that the end of an era is imminent for the iPod.

With just days to go before Apple announces the results of its fourth fiscal quarter, new data from market research firm Gartner has the Mac maker snagging a near 10 percent share of the US PC market for the three month period ending September, with its unit shipments growing more than six times the industry average.

Belgium is the latest nation rumored to receive an unlocked 3G iPhone by June. Meanwhile, Toshiba says it plans over the next year or so to quadruple the capacity of its flash-based solid-state drives (SSDs) while simultaneously reducing costs by as much as 50 percent. And traffic to Apple's web properties rose 13 percent during the first quarter of 2008.

The conflict between high-definition disc formats is rapidly drawing to a close, as Wal-Mart is the latest store to back Blu-ray over HD DVD and Toshiba is reportedly poised to withdraw its format from the market in the near future.
