Security body FIDO has received new backing from Apple, Google, and Microsoft, with the tech companies all announcing that they are expanding support for the alliance's passwordless sign-in standard.
Physical security keys are nothing new on iOS, but a new update announced Wednesday expands the use of keys with NFC and other new technologies for Google authentication.
Following an update to Google's iOS Smart Lock app, iPhones can now be used as a Fast Identity Online (FIDO) security key. This replaces the physical hardware keys previously required — and brings the iPhone into line with Android phones.
