Rumors, which spread late last year about illuminated keyboards in Apple's test labs, may not have been too far off.
According to anonymous sources, Apple's peripheral and design units have been testing a new technology that places small lights beneath the keys on a keyboard and illuminates the type face of each key.
The computer maker has reportedly been testing the technology on prototypes of keyboards that may eventually become part of their future iBook offerings. The company is said to be using Indiglo, which are the same EL (Electro-Lumenesicence) lamps used in many fashionable watch faces these days.
The illuminated keyboard feature aims to allow Apple portable users to more easily function in the dark. With the widespread availability of Apple's AirPort hubs and iBooks, many consumers are going to find themselves snuggled up in the dark with their iBook by their pillow.
There has been no word on whether the technology cleared any or all of Apple's quality assurance tests, hence approving it for real world usage and production.
