Apple sells 1.6 million Macs, nearly 1 million notebooks

Apple Computer said Wednesday it sold a total of 1,610,000 Macintosh computers during the three-month period ending September, including nearly 1 million notebook systems.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company shipped a combined 986,000 MacBook and MacBook Pro notebook systems, representing 56 percent year-over-year unit growth. Notebook revenues accounted for $1.34 billion, up 63 percent yearly.

Compared to the previous quarter, notebook sales were up 24 percent and represented a 16 percent increase in revenue.

During the quarter, Apple also sold 624,000 desktop systems, accounting for $869 million in revenue. Sales of Mac desktops were up 18 percent from the company's previous quarter, but represented only 4 percent increase from the year-ago quarter.

Apple's desktop systems include the iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro.

The company also said it sold 8.73 million iPods during the quarter.
