Roundup: The best ways to stave off cabin fever with your iPhone or iPad

We all know what it's like to be stuck indoors thanks to inclement weather. Fortunately, the bevy of electronic devices that most of us now carry are capable of providing nearly endless entertainment if stocked properly (and the power holds out). AppleInsider took a look at some of the best games and apps for passing the time.

The usual suspects: Of course, the first apps most people will turn to are from streaming media firms like Netflix or Pandora — but we won't talk about those, because they're surely already in your arsenal. They also won't be much use if your Internet service provider of fiat ends up failing, which is also why we left out online gems like Real Racing 3 and FIFA 15.

Entertain yourself

Monument Valley won a dump-truck full of awards in 2014 —  including an Apple Design Award — and for good reason. The M.C. Escher-esque imagery and deeply layered soundscape are mesmerizing, and each level comes as just enough of a challenge to keep you entertained without throwing your phone across the room in protest.

Monument Valley is a $3.99, 266-megabyte download from the App Store.

RapMushi is a Japanese soundboard app with a quirky, hand-drawn user interface (largely in Japanese) that lets users create funky beats. In the words of creator Tsubasa Naruse, "you can feel like a "Rapper", by pushing the words panel rhythmically."

RapMushi is a free, 14-megabyte download from the App Store.

Crossy Road combines Frogger with Flappy Bird. It's great fun and —  best of all —  free to play, though there are some optional in-app purchases. Its most notable achievement, though, may well be the fact that it boasts a perfect five-star rating from over 200,000 reviews.

Crossy Road is a free, 43.7-megabyte download from the App Store.

R.B.I. Baseball 14 is a mobile recreation of the famous R.B.I Baseball series for the NES, directly from Major League Baseball. It features 480 current MLB players from all 30 teams, and brings back the arcade-style 2-button gameplay that made it famous in the 80's.

R.B.I. Baseball 14 is a $4.99, 336-megabyte download from the App Store.

Hang with your friends

Spaceteam lets players connect multiple devices together via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and puts you in charge of a ship rocketing through space. Everyone must work together, shouting out instructions to push a button, toggle a switch, or adjust slider and dials to avoid certain death. It even works across platforms, if your friends have a mix of recent iOS and Android devices.

Spaceteam is a free, 32.5-megabyte download from the App Store.

Worms 2: Armageddon will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the 90's playing the evergreen Worms series in school. It retains much of the same gameplay, adding updated graphics and offline multiplayer for up to 4 players on different devices. It can also be used for pass-around multiplayer on an iPad.

Worms 2: Armageddon is a $0.99, 215-megabyte download from the App Store.

NBA Jam is another familiar old-school arcade game that brings a touch of Nintendo to iOS. All of our favorite moves are retained —  boomshakalaka! —  and local multiplayer lets any two players square off against each other head-to-head.

NBA Jam is a $0.99, 278-megabyte download from the App Store.

Ready Steady Bang pits two players against each other in a test of reaction time. Two pixelated cowboys stand in as avatars, and the aim is to out-draw your opponent when the variable timer goes off. A series of unique and humorous death throes is included.

ready Steady Bang is a $0.99, 12.6-megabyte download from the App Store.

Pass the time with your significant other

Bounden is a dancing game designed in consultation with the Dutch National Ballet. Its three-dimensional interface, in which you contort your body to collect rings from around a virtual sphere, works equally well dancing alone or with a partner — in which case it becomes a somewhat bourgeois game of Twister.

Bounden is a $2.99, 41.4-megabyte download from the App Store.

iKamasutra brings the ancient Hindu text into the 21st century, helpfully translated into English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. 110 positions are available at purchase, with the ability to unlock over 100 more via in-app purchase.

iKamasutra is a $2.99, 27.1-megabyte download from the App Store.

Confession: A Roman Catholic App lets Catholic users prepare for confession. It supports multiple password-protected user profiles, the ability to add custom sins, and seven different acts of contrition. The app has received an imprimatur from Bishop Kevin C. Rhodes of the Diocese of Fort Wayne and is the first such imprimatur known to be given for an app.

Confession: A Roman Catholic App is a $1.99, 3.8-megabyte download from the App Store.

Bonus: While the Internet still works

Hipmunk's free iOS app is the best way to search for deals on flights and hotels on your iPhone or iPad. Use it to plan a trip somewhere warm —  you'll need it once the snow melts.
