'Ted Lasso' wins Best Comedy at Writers' Guild Awards

Following its three Critics Choice awards, and its one Golden Globe, "Ted Lasso" has now won two categories in the 2021 Writers' Guild of America Awards. The football comedy is currently in production for its second season.

"It's incredible to be selected by our fellow peers, our writers, our brothers and sisters in this crazy part of our business of show," said star and co-writer Jason Sudeikis, as he accepted the award in the remote ceremony. "So thank you for choosing us, for ticking that box, in the majority at least. I assume not everybody did. I mean, right? That'd be nuts. What if I did assume that? Thank you to everyone."

The WGA honored "Ted Lasso" in its Best Comedy Series category, where it beat shows ranging from longstanding hit "Curb Your Enthusiasm," to the new "What We Do in the Shadows."

In its Best New Series category, "Ted Lasso" beat out "Dave," "The Flight Attendant," "The Great," and "Lovecraft Country."

In a press releases after the ceremony, Apple credited writers Jane Becker, Leann Bowen, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, Bill Lawrence, Jamie Lee, Jason Sudeikis, Phoebe Walsh, and Bill Wrubel.

"Since its debut, the beloved freshman comedy series has been recognized with a multitude of awards and nominations," said Apple in a statement, "including being the only comedy series honored as an AFI Program of the Year."

"Including today's recognitions for 'Ted Lasso,' Apple has been honored with a total of 86 awards wins and 329 awards nominations and accolades, since its global launch just over a year ago.

"Ted Lasso" was conceived as a three-season project, but the creators have recently hinted that they now want it to continue far beyond that.
