In a change introduced at the 2021 WWDC, developers will soon be able to manage refunds using in-app tools and access to new APIs using iOS 15.
With iOS 14 and earlier, Apple has controlled all aspects of refunds for app transactions, creating a pain point for developers and customers alike. As of iOS 15, launching in the fall, developers will have greater control of the refund process.
According to new developer documentation, Apple will streamline the refund process by enabling developers to direct customers to the refund workflow. Currently, it is difficult for customers to ask for a refund, let alone be aware the process exists.
Developers will be able to add a section to their app for handling purchase issues. From there, developers can guide users through a sequence of questions to find the best solution, including a refund.
If a user selects the refund option, it initiates the Apple refund workflow. This option being surfaced within apps will likely make the process easier for users and remove the burden of explanation from the developer.
Apple has admitted to having a subset of developers with special access to certain features including those used for refund and subscription control. The company tests some new tools and features in small groups of developers before announcing them publicly.
