Nanoleaf products will soon act as Thread border routers for HomeKit devices

Nanoleaf products can now act as Thread border routers for HomeKit

During CES 2022, Nanoleaf announced a forthcoming firmware update that will allow its products to act as Thread border routers to all HomeKit over Thread devices.

Expected to roll out in Q1 of 2022, the new firmware update broadens support for Thread beyond what Nanoleaf's products are currently capable of.

After the update, Shapes, Lines, and Elements can act as Thread border routers for the Nanoleaf Essentials Bulb & Lightstrip, Apple TV 4K, Eve's Thread-enabled products, and Wemo's Stage scene controller. Future Thread devices that support HomeKit will work as well.

This makes Nanoleaf the only company, after Apple, to act as Thread border routers for HomeKit devices. Aside from Nanoleaf's hardware, the only other options users have are HomePod mini or the latest Apple TV 4K.

Thread creates a low-power mesh network between devices that is able to self-heal should a device go offline. A Thread border router connects your Thread devices to your home network.

Nanoleaf says it is also working to support Matter in its existing and future products. The first Nanoleaf product to support Matter is expected in the second half of 2022.
