Apple's iPhone 14 battery capacities revealed in filing

Apple only ever talks about battery life in hours of use, but now specific details have been revealed — and two of the four iPhone 14 models have increased battery capacities.

Apple's listing of battery capacity in terms of hours is practical in the sense that it is what most users will think of, but it's also very approximate. Battery life depends on a user's usage and settings such as screen brightness, and Apple naturally lists the maximum durations it can.

Even now that specific battery capacities have been revealed in a filing in the Chemtec database, it remains true that a user can only estimate battery life from the figures. However, they give a point of comparison, not only between the different iPhone 14 models, but also between those and the 2021 iPhone 13 range.

The capacities for the new iPhone 14 range are:

  • iPhone 14: 12.68 watt hours
  • iPhone 14 Plus: 16.68 watt hours
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 12.38 watt hours
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 16.68 watt hours

There was no "iPhone 13 Plus" to compare the new iPhone 14 Plus to, but otherwise the previous models were rated as this:

  • iPhone 13: 12.41 watt hours
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 11.97 watt hours
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 16.75 watt hours

Notably, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a slightly decreased battery capacity — it's 0.07 watt hours lower. But both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro have increased their capacities.

In short, assuming battery management is the same, the battery lives will be about equivalent to the corresponding iPhone 13.

The iPhone 14 Pro has the greatest increase, at 0.41 watt hours. For the iPhone 14, compared to the iPhone 13, it's an increase of 0.27 watt hours.
