Apple isn't just declaring its independence from Google Maps with its new in-house backend for Maps in iOS 6. It has developed a superior way to deliver map data that relies on resolution independent vectors rather than Google's multiple zoom levels of bit mapped images.
Apple is not only disconnecting its native iOS 6 Maps app from Google's servers, but will also redirect all third party app requests to its own mapping servers, immediately taking the majority of mobile maps traffic away from Google as it forges new strategic partnerships for mapping.
Apple devices running iOS 6 will be able to receive U.S. government alerts during an emergency or disaster, in compliance with a National Alerting Program.
Another new feature coming in iOS 6 will be limited to devices running Apple's custom A5 chip or later, as FaceTime over 3G will only be capable on the iPhone 4S or third-generation iPad.
Rather than include transit and walking directions natively in the new Maps application in iOS 6, Apple will instead highlight third-party options available on the iOS App Store.
Apple's three digital storefronts will see significant changes with the launch of iOS 6, including new looks and new functionality for the App Store, iTunes Store, and iBookstore.
The launch of iOS 6 will bring greater automobile integration to the iPhone with "Eyes Free," a new feature that will allow a car to bring up Siri voice control.
When Apple launches iOS 6 this fall, iPhone 4 users won't be able to use turn-by-turn directions or Flyover in the new Maps application, as that functionality is limited to the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and third-generation iPad.
New functionality has been added to the native Settings application in iOS 6, including a new "Do Not Disturb" feature, privacy settings, and quicker access to turn Bluetooth on or off.
This year's iOS 6 upgrade will bring the Siri personal assistant software to Apple's third-generation iPad, and will also add system-wide integration with Facebook for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.
The release of iOS 6 later this year will mark a major shift for Apple away from Google Maps to its own in-house mapping solution, complete with 3D recreations of cities, turn-by-turn directions and crowd-sourced traffic data.
The iPad will gain a new native application when users upgrade to iOS 6: The Clock software previously found on the iPhone.
