A mobile version of EA's powerful Frostbite engine, used to create recent titles in series such as "Battlefield" and "Need for Speed," will be coming to Apple's iPhone and iPad.
Battlefield 4 will be the first tile on EA's Frostbite 3 engine. A mobile version, dubbed "Frostbite Go," is also in the works.
The mobile engine, dubbed Frostbite Go, was revealed by on an official site for the software created by EA-owned developer DICE. The site refers to Frostbite Go as one of DICE's "most exciting current projects."
The in-development engine is currently "empowering EA game developers" with valuable tools and aims to bring "true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms," the site states.
In another section of the official Frostbite website, EA goes one step further and confirms that the engine will be available on a wide range of platforms, from iOS and Android to Sony's newly announced PlayStation 4 console. The details were first discovered this week by user "Nirolak" on the NeoGAF forums.
EA has not yet announced any specific titles for iOS, but the site does confirm that games are actively in development using the Frostbite Go engine.
Frostbite Go will join a number of high-profile commercial game engines available for iOS. The most notable is the Unreal engine from Epic Games, which powers titles like the popular Infinity Blade series with console-quality graphics.
EA already has a large presence on iOS, and in recent months has made a strong push toward casual and "freemium" titles. One of the company's most high-profile mobile releases this year was Real Racing 3, and EA's The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Tetris are currently two of the highest grossing applications available on the iPhone.
