Adding to a quickly expanding product lineup, wearable fitness monitor maker Misfit on Tuesday announced two new models created in collaboration with jewelry maker Swarovski, further blurring the line between fitness device and fashion accessory.
Befitting its name, Misfit's Swarovski Shine collection consists of two distinct models featuring a large, faceted Swarovski crystal face, one in clear and another in violet. The latter version is arguably more interesting as it comes with solar charging capabilities that all but eliminate the need for nightly wall charging or monthly battery swaps.
Misfit explains that placing the specially designed violet Swarovski "energy crystal" on Shine's front face helps gather light, which is then collected and converted into electricity by an onboard solar array. The process is said to be highly efficient for such a small footprint, with Misfit claiming only 15 minutes of sunlight needed to fully charge the device.
As with other Shine models, the Swarovski-adorned variants are waterproof, track movement data using onboard sensors and roll in sleep tracking capabilities.
With tasteful pendant and bracelet accessories, Misfit is obviously targeting a fashion conscious crowd that is perhaps interested in fitness trackers, but may not have taken the plunge due to generally bland designs.
The clear Swarovski Shine is scheduled to launch in spring at a starting price of $169.99, while the solar-powered violet version is slated to debut in mid-2015. Preorders are currently being accepted online through Misfit.com, while brick and mortar Swarovski outlets will stock the products later this year.
