Apple selected popular iPhone drawing app Procreate Pocket as its latest paid app giveaway on Wednesday, making the former App Store Editors Choice and App Store Best of 2015 title available for free from the Apple Store app for iOS.
Available for a limited time through the official Apple Store app for iOS, Procreate Pocket is a stripped down version of iPad app Procreate. A longtime favorite of digital artists, Procreate on iPad was one of the first third-party titles to build in support for Apple Pencil when the stylus launched alongside iPad Pro last year.
While not as full featured as its iPad counterpart, Procreate Pocket is packed with useful tools that make sketching on iPhone a less painful experience. For example, the app includes 12 brush types with support for pressure sensitive drawing on devices equipped with 3D Touch. Users have the option of downloading or importing additional tools. A separate Apple Watch app acts as a secondary UI for selecting brushes and tools, picking from color swatches and executing general app commands.
Made for iPhone, the app incorporates Procreate's Silica graphics engine and boasts 64-bit color, 250 levels of undo, continuous autosave, 4K canvas sizes, a customizable layers system with blend modes and advanced image filters. Like the iPad version, Procreate Pocket records a video of an artist's creative process in 1080p. Files can be shared via iCloud Drive, AirDrop and AirPrint in .procreate, PSD, JPG and 24-bit PNG formats.
Those interested can find a redemption code for Procreate Pocket in both the "Featured" and "Stores" sections of the free Apple Store app for iOS.
Apple began giving away paid software through the Apple Store app in 2013 and continues to provide customers with fresh selections from time to time as a way to incentivize periodic check-ins.
