Google on Wednesday launched Family Library, a feature for the Google Play Store closely mirroring Apple's own Family Sharing for iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store -- including some iOS support.
Like Family Sharing, Family Library allows up to six people to share books, apps, and video, with music requiring a separate subscription -- in this case, Google Play Music. While everyone in the group can potentially share the same material, members can also choose to keep some content personal.
A single credit card has to be designated as a default family payment option, but members can still choose to use separate credit or gift cards. Parents can optionally require that children get approval for each purchase.
Notably while app sharing is limited to Android, all other content can additionally be shared across iOS devices, so long as family members have the right Google apps installed.
Initially Family Library is debuting in a dozen countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. The rollout is a gradual one however, so some people in those regions may still have to wait.
