By Andrew Orr

Apple has recently launched the second developer betas for watchOS 9.6 and tvOS 16.6, following the release of the first beta phase.

Apple releases new betas

Developers who are part of the beta program can acquire the latest versions by either accessing them through the Apple Developer Center or updating their devices with the beta software. Typically, public beta versions become available shortly after the developer releases, through the Apple Beta Software Program.

After releasing the first betas for watchOS 9.6 and tvOS 16.6 on May 19, Apple has now introduced the second developer betas for watchOS 9.6 and tvOS 16.6, carrying forward the ongoing cycle.

Although specific details regarding the features and modifications in these new betas have not been disclosed yet, additional information will become available as developers explore and engage with the operating systems.

The initial beta version of watchOS 9.6 is identified by the build number 20U5538d, replacing the build 20U5527c of the first watchOS 9.6 beta release. The new build number for tvOS 16.6 and HomePod software is 20M5538d, an update from the 20M5527e previous build.

AppleInsider and Apple strongly suggest users don't install beta operating systems or other beta software on "mission-critical" or primary devices, as there is the small chance of issues that could result in the loss of data. Testers should instead use secondary or non-essential hardware and ensure they have sufficient backups of their critical data at all times.
