Apple TV+ orders series adaptation of 'City on Fire'

By Mikey Campbell

Apple on Wednesday announced a series order for "City on Fire," an adaptation of the novel by Garth Risk Hallberg set to debut on Apple TV+.

Produced by Apple Studios, "City on Fire" is a drama that tells the tale of NYU student Samantha Cicciaro, who is shot in Central Park on the Fourth of July, 2003.

The ensuing investigation reveals a tangled web of mysteries involving a series of citywide fires, the downtown music scene and a wealthy real estate family, all of which tie back to Samantha.

The show is written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage ("Gossip Girl," "Looking for Alaska," "The OC"), and is the first series to come out of a first-look deal with Schwartz and Savage's Fake Empire Productions.

Schwartz and Savage will write all eight episodes of the first season and will serve as showrunners, Apple said. Fake Empire's Lis Rowinski will serve as co-executive producer.

Apple has not announced a premiere date.

Apple TV+ is slowly growing its content library with new shows, limited series and films. Upcoming highlights include the Martin Scorsese produced Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle "Killers of the Flower Moon," Antoine Fuqua and Will Smith project "Emancipation," and Steven Spielberg's "Masters of the Air."

The new originals join a short list of critically acclaimed exclusives like "Ted Lasso," "The Morning Show" and "Helpsters."
