"CODA" won Apple its first three Oscars - getting Best Adapted Screenplay for writer/director Sian Heder, and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, as well as Best Picture. To celebrate the achievement, the first time any streamer has won the top Academy Award, Apple has announced a re-release in theaters.
"As our industry recognizes CODA' with its highest honor, we're excited once again to bring this moving film to theaters," Erica Anderson from Apple Original Films' Distribution team, told Variety, "so that audiences can share in the experience of watching it together."
"As with previous theatrical runs, all showings will have open captions," she continued, "so that the film is accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities."
"CODA" is the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), a hearing child of deaf adults, who is torn between staying with the family's struggling fishing business, or leaving to pursue her love of singing.
It had a theatrical release in 2021, when it was also the first movie to be shown exclusively with burned-in subtitle captions on screen.
According to Variety, that 2021 limited release screening took on only $1 million at the box office. Now Apple is screening it in over 600 theaters across the US.
The film remains available to watch streaming on Apple TV+.
