"Flappy Bird" fans have spent more than ten years trying to bring it back to mobile phones -- and now the eponymous hero will return in 2024.
'Flappy Bird' to return to iPhone in 2024
was a wildly popular game that first hit the Apple App Store in the first half of 2013. It didn't take long for the challenging arcade game to become the number one downloaded free game for iPhone. At its height, it earned more than $50,000 daily from in-app advertisements and sales.
In January 2014, Flappy Bird flew on the Google Play store. However, it wouldn't stay there long.
In February 2014, Dong Nguyen, the game's creator, pulled the game from both the App Store and the Google Play store. His reasoning was that the game Flappy Bird had become too addictive.
But on Thursday, FlappyBird.org announced that the game would be returning to mobile phones in 2024.
"Just a decade ago, I was the talk of the town and soaring to new heights with my 100 million friends," the website reads. "Sadly, I had to leave the fame and spotlight behind to go home and find out who I really am."
"Thanks to my super Flappy Bird fans, I'm refreshed, reinvigorated, and ready to soar again," it continues. "The decade-long mission involved acquiring legal rights and even working with my predecessor to uncage me and rehatch the official Flappy Bird game!"
In addition to bringing back the classic arcade mode, the refreshed Flappy Bird will feature new game modes, including an easier mode, a basketball mode, and what appears to be a battle royale mode.
There will also be new characters, including Trixie, Peng, Tekno, and Quirky, all appearing to have character-specific superpowers.
Flappy Bird doesn't have an official release date. The website and trailer both say that it should be "landing soon" and suggest that it will be in 2024.
