Apple abruptly closes flagship Montreal Apple Store over COVID-19

Apple Sainte-Catherine has been closed until further notice, reportedly due to an "abundance of caution" over the coronavirus.

According to local broadcaster CTV, the store was closed some time on Friday. A customer told the news station that she had brought a laptop in for repairs on Thursday August 6 and was originally told it would take up to ten days to repair.

Then she was contacted and asked to collect it before 17:00 local time on Friday August 7 because the store was being closed.

CTV says the customer asked an employee if there had been a positive case of COVID-19 at the Store but he or she would not confirm it. Apple told CTV that "due to current COVID-19 conditions in some of the communities we serve, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas."

However, the flagship Apple Sainte-Catherine is one of four stores in or around Quebec, and none of the others have as yet been closed. There are 30 Apple Stores in Canada, and currently Apple Sainte-Catherine is the only one not open.

In its email to CTV, Apple added only that "we take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible."
