Worldwide, starting in iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, Apple will allow developers to stream games under a single app rather than submitting each game under the streaming umbrella to content review.
On Thursday, Apple announced that it would be changing the way it handles game streaming services for iOS and iPadOS.
Previously, if a developer wanted to allow game streaming on an iPhone or iPad, they would need to submit each game for review. Now, with the advent of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, developers can submit a single app that has the capability to stream all games offered within their catalog.
There is a caveat, however. Each core streaming app will still need to adhere to all App Store Review Guidelines. The host app will be required to maintain an age rating of the highest age-rated content included in the app.
This would mean if a developer had even a single M-rated game that featured sexual or violent content, the host app would need to be rated at 17+.
The change is significant, as previously services like Microsoft's Xcloud would need to utilize Safari to access their game catalogs.
Also announced on Thursday, Apple will implement the ability for developers in the EU to use the iPhone near-field communication that Apple Pay uses for other banking and wallet apps.
Apple has also revealed that it will be adding new fees, new options for EU developers, including allowing alternative marketplaces. Developers who want to offer their own marketplace will have to be approved by Apple.
