Apple CEO Tim Cook is scheduled to deliver a "virtual commencement address" for Ohio State University students graduating this spring, the university announced on Friday.

Cook

will be Ohio State's commencement speaker in a virtual ceremony to be broadcast online on May 3. University president Michael V. Drake announced the development today.

"I am delighted to welcome Tim Cook as our spring commencement speaker," Drake said. "We are grateful for Mr. Cook's participation in this important tradition and know his unique insights will guide Buckeyes as they continue to innovate the future."

Ohio State originally planned to conduct traditional commencement proceedings in May, but restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic forced a last-minute change. Instead of inviting friends and family to participate in the proceedings typically held at Ohio Stadium, the ceremony will be limited to Drake, university officials, special guests and Cook's commencement address. Whether Cook plans to deliver his speech in person, as a recorded video or via teleconference remains unclear.

The university notes those taking part in the ceremony will adhere to social distancing protocols.

As noted by the Ohio State News, Apple partnered with the institution to launch a Digital Flagship learning program in 2017. As part of the university-wide initiative, 65,000 iPads are being deployed to students over a five-year span and an iOS laboratory was established to serve as an educational hub for students and an economic development center for the wider community.
