The Apple Pay support will be offered by Ireland-based credit unions through the currentaccount.ie brand, which was set up to offer banking services with debit cards to consumers.
Currentaccount.ie already supports Google Pay and Fitbit Pay, but will now work with Apple's contactless payment system on iPhone and Apple Watch.
According to The Irish Independent, another five credit unions in the country have signed up to offer the current account with Apple Pay support. The addition of Apple Pay integration comes after a leading Irish credit union decided to stop providing current account services.
Apple first launched the Apple Pay service in Ireland in March 2017 with support for KBC and Ulster Bank. In 2020, the Bank of Ireland also started supporting integration with Apple's payment system.
