In 2021, Sudeikis's win was the first-ever Golden Globe for Apple TV+. Also as in 2021, it was Apple's only win out of several nominations.
"Ted Lasso" was beaten to the award for Best Musical/Comedy Series by HBO Max's "Hacks." The comedy's Brett Goldstein missed out on the Best Supporting Actor - Television category as O Yeong-su won for "Squid Game" on Netflix.
Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass had also been nominated for this category for their work on Apple's "The Morning Show." Star Jennifer Aniston lost out in the Best Television Actress - Drama category to Michaela Jae Rodriguez in FX's "Pose."
Hannah Waddingham was beaten to the Best Supporting Actress - Television category by Sarah Snook, for "Succession" on HBO. And "CODA" was a runner-up in the Best Picture Drama category, beaten by writer/director Jane Campion's "The Power of the Dog."
The Golden Globes are awarded by the 87 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Since the 2021 ceremony, however, the organization has been highly criticized after it was revealed that it had no Black members.
While the organization has committed to reforms to address this and other concerns, a number of media firms announced that they would cease their activities with it. They include NBC, which said it would not televise the 2022 ceremony, although it will reconsider for 2023.
Consequently, this year's Golden Globes are much lower-profile than before. Variety described the previously prestigious ceremony by saying, "Golden Globes put on an event that could have been put in an email."
