Foxconn is expected to expand one of its factories in India to enable iPhone manufacturing, thus increasing production capabilities in the country.
Foxconn is building an addition on an India factory for iPhone production
The existing facility in Tamil Nadu is close to the Chennai facility already used for iPhone production. Foxconn is expected to finish the new expansion and begin hiring within the next two months.
According to a report from The Economic Times, the Foxconn expansion in India is part of its previously announced plans, not a new effort. The new facility would aid in Apple's efforts to diversify its supply chain locations and have more devices made outside of China.
The Chennai facility had recently dealt with food poisoning among workers that led to protests. Hostels that housed workers were closed down as a response, and have since begun reopening.
As the new Tamil Nadu expansion is completed, a new wave of hiring will occur just as workers move back to the hostels. Devices built in the updated facility will be able to be sold locally thanks to being built in a Domestic Tariff Area.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly stated the importance of getting a foothold in the rapidly expanding market of India. Making more devices in the country is key to penetrating that market.
