Apple event excitement, TikTok controversy, and useless VPNs, on the AppleInsider podcast

By William Gallagher

On this week's episode of the AppleInsider Podcast, iPhone 14 is getting nearer -- and some say it'll be sooner than we think. Plus Apple threatens its own staff over TikTok use, and there's compelling evidence that iOS VPNs do not work.

It seems to be all about time this week, as the clock is ticking down toward when Apple will first announce its iPhone 14 event, and the stage it. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is betting that we're going to be surprised at just how quickly Apple gets that iPhone 14 range out of the door, too.

But then there's the TikTok of Apple's continued poor record of managing its staff. An Apple engineer gave out some good and sensible advice in a TikTok video and, at time of writing, is waiting to hear whether she's being fired or not.

And then there's the case where a clock won't cut it, we need a calendar for this one. Apple has allegedly taken two years, and counting, over fixing an issue with iOS that may mean you've been wasting whatever fee you pay for a VPN.

The short version is that because of a bug, it's alleged that not every connection you make over VPN -- on iOS and iPadOS, that is -- is guaranteed to be secure. If you were on a site or a service before switching on the VPN, it's even likely that your previous insecure connection will stay active.
