The Kensington Studio Dock is not compatible with the thicker 12.9-inch iPad Pro and Kensington has told us that there is a refresh coming soon.
The Kensington Studio Dock will need to be updated to support the new iPad Pro thickness
The 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro is a half-millimeter thicker than its predecessor, thanks to its mini-LED display. This slight change has been enough to cause compatibility issues with some precisely machined accessories.
Kensington updated its website to indicate the Studio Dock for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro was not compatible with the 2021 model. AppleInsider reached out to confirm the issue with device thickness.
"The new 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" is incompatible with the current StudioDock because it is thicker in size than the 2018-2020 models (6.4mm vs. 5.9mm)," Kensington told AppleInsider. "Kensington is planning on launching a new SKU to support the new iPad Pro."
It isn't yet clear when the new model will ship.
The Kensington Studio Dock is a $399.99 dock/stand that adds multiple ports to the iPad Pro in an elegant stand. We reviewed the Studio Dock and found it to be a great option for serious iPad Pro users, if expensive.
Apple similarly updated its Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro with a new SKU to support the thicker design. Customers who purchased the Magic Keyboard in 2020 who planned on upgrading haven't taken to the news well.
There is still some hope for early adopters of the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. Apple released a support document saying the old Magic Keyboard case would still be functionally compatible with the new iPad Pro but wouldn't "precisely fit when closed."
