Apple Working On Multiprocessor Power Macs

Ever since Apple announced its strategy for Mac OS X, and the high-end features it would support, readers and industry figures alike have toyed with the notion of Apple releasing multiprocessor Power Macintosh G4 systems.

Recently, during a series of Professional Seminars held by Apple Computer, Apple employees have responded to inquiries about multiprocessor systems quite favorably. On more than one occasion, they have polled the audience on their level of interest in a set of multiprocessor systems from Apple.

Usually this would all amount to nothing more than hearsay, but recently sources confirmed a multiprocessor Power Macintosh G4 project underway at Apple. Rumored to go by the code-name "Mystic," the current Apple multiprocessor project apparently involves a 2-processor Power Macintosh G4 system. According to sources, this unit is due to debut around the time of Mac OS X early in the year 2000.

Additionally, rumor has it that Apple has a 4-processor Power Macintosh G4 system under development, though there is no word on an arrival date. Obviously, a move in the direction of multiprocessor machines would be well accepted by Apple's core graphics and media market, but exactly how the units will fit into Apple's product strategy is yet to be seen.

Updates will follow as information becomes available.
