Notes: GarageBand, Power Macs, Xserves and GMail

GarageBand 1.0.2

Unless version information was mistakenly entered into Apple's Web support database this week, iLife '04 owners can expect a second incremental update to GarageBand in the immediate future. It appears that all the application's online support pages have been updated to reflect GarageBand version 1.0.2. The last publicly announced update to the music production application was 1.0.1.

Power Mac G5 Revision

Anonymous sources have confirmed portions of a recent report on pending updates to Apple's Power Mac G5 product line. According to information which is believed to be very accurate, Q77 is indeed a name used externally to referred to speed bumped Power Mac G5 units. Sources also confirmed that the absence of faster models is a direct result of an unanticipated setback. "Something has gone terribly wrong," one source said, who noted that prototypes of the revised Power Macs first shipped to select partners prior to the start of the year, but would not comment further.

A second AppleInsider source corroborated the aforementioned details and provided helpful background information, but asked that specifics be withheld from publication. Interestingly, while vouching for the accuracy of reports on Q77, the source claimed no prior knowledge of Q78 and speculated that the project may be a late addition aimed at improving on original plans for the revision.

Meanwhile, Power Mac G5 revision specs, model numbers and rumored US government purchases touted elsewhere on the Web are completely false and fabricated, very reliable sources told AppleInsider. However, these reports are being fabricated by an individual and not the publications they appear on.

Xserves

An accidentally overlooked report from almost two weeks ago indicates that Apple continues to push back dual Xserve G5 orders. According to the report, on March 23rd an educational order for a dual Xserve G5 was changed to reflect a ship date of no earlier than May 18th. The source of the report indicated that he had inside information that stated his delay was due to a lack of hard drive raid controllers.

Google GMail

Earlier this week, Google sources indicated that the company would open up its recently announce GMail service for public testing this Thursday, barring any unexpected issues. Unfortunately, it appears that GMail does not support the latest version of Safari.
