Instapaper goes free as 'App of the Week,' Evernote gets business card scanningWeb page saving, syncing and reading app Instapaper is free for limited time after being named "App of the Week," while popular note creation and syncing app Evernote gets updated with business card scanning, presentation mode and UI tweaks.
After being purchased by Betaworks earlier this year, popular digital content reading app Instapaper has undergone a few changes, including a redesign to bring the title in line with Apple's iOS 7 aesthetic.
Apple on Thursday named Instapaper its iOS App of the Week, making it free for users for the first time since it launched in 2010.
The app is able to save Web pages as text-only documents, stripping away layout code for an optimal reading experience on mobile screens like those of the iPhone and iPad. Articles can be synced and stored for offline reading, while the app has "Send to Instapaper" hooks in 150 other titles.
Instapaper is a free 18MB download from the iOS App Store.
Also on Thursday, Evernote was updated to version 7.2, bringing a number of new features to its note taking arsenal.
The app can now "scan in" business cards using an iOS device's on-board camera and apply optical character recognition to turn the information into editable data fields. There is also an option for users to automatically send their information to the new contact upon successful scanning.
In addition, a new presentation mode can display a user's notes on a bigger screen via an AirPlay or hardwired connection.
Both new features can be accessed now by premium members, while users of the free version can scan up to five business cards and preview presentation mode for 14 days.
Finally, a new "Duplicate" option can create multiple copies of a note, while the Sync button has been moved to the app's home screen.
Evernote comes in at 36.5MB and can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
