Apple cable supplier Foxlink to increase production at new plant in India

By Amber Neely

Apple supplier Foxlink will begin ramping up cable production later in 2020 from a new plant in India, as manufacturers hurry to set up a supply chain outside China.

As trade tensions with China continue, many major Apple suppliers are attempting to establish new manufacturing and assembly plants elsewhere.

Cheng Uei -- also known as Foxlink -- set up a new plant in India earlier in 2020, where they will ultimately begin mass production for Apple. The company is known for producing cables and connectors, such as Apple's Lightning connector.

At present, it isn't clear if the produced cables will be exported, or retained in the India market. Apple's iPhone 12 lineup -- including cabling -- was manufactured in China.

Many of Apple's major assembly partners, including Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron, have set up subsidiaries and assembly plants in India, as pointed out by Bloomberg.

India has been attempting to attract major smartphone manufacturers for some time now under its "Make in India" program. Recently, the country approved incentives to 16 companies, including a trio of Apple suppliers, in an effort to boost domestic smartphone production.
