Western Digital unveils new 4TB capacities on several flagship SSDs at CES 2021

At CES 2021, Western Digital took the opportunity to upgrade several of its drives with new 4TB capacities including its new SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD and WD_BLACK P50 Game Drive SSD.

The four drives gaining upgraded capacity options are the SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, the WD_BLACK P50 Game Drive SSD, and the My Passport SSD from WD. All four connect to a host device with a USB 3.1 type C connector.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD can reach read and write speeds of 2,000 megabytes per second, features an aluminum chassis, and will be available soon for $749.99.

Clocking in just under the Extreme Pro, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD can reach speeds of 1,050 megabytes per second. It has two-meter drop protection, IP55 water and dust resistance, and will be available in the new 4TB size in the first quarter of 2021 for $699.99.

Gamers will appreciate the higher storage cap on the WD_BLACK P50 Game SSD. With speeds up to 2,000 megabytes per second, this drive is purpose-built for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The new 4TB option will be available in the first quarter of 2021 for $749.99.

Finally, the Western Digital My Passport SSD will also come in the new 4TB capacity. This drive has a metal design, is drop-resistant to six and a half feet, and comes in a variety of colors. With speeds up to 1,050 megabytes per second, this drive will also be available in the first quarter for $679.99 MSRP.

I love the 2TB version, would love to get a 4TB one but to at that cost unfortunately.

I have a 16” MBP with 2 TB storage. Can anyone suggest a time machine backup SSD drive for me. 


I don’t hookup the TM drive to my MBP regularly. So every backup take a long time. That is why I think I need SSD.

Will 2 TB SSD too small for my need? I currently only use less than 1TB on my MBP.
