Apple seeds sixth developer betas for iOS 15, iPadOS 15, tvOS 15

Last updated

Apple has arrived at its sixth beta round for its milestone operating system releases, providing developers with new test builds of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and tvOS 15 to try out.

The latest builds can be downloaded by developers in the beta-testing scheme via the Apple Developer Center, or as an over-the-air update for hardware already using earlier beta builds. A public beta version of the releases is expected to start arriving soon, and will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program website.

Round six was preceded by round 5, which was on August 10 for iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS, August 11 for watchOS. Previous beta versions were issued on July 27, July 14, June 24, and June 7, with final releases anticipated for the fall.

In iOS 15, Apple adds Focus modes, as well as Live Text OCR, Wallet gains digital ID support, FaceTime and Messages are enhanced, and the Weather and Maps apps are given some improvements. In the fourth beta, it was discovered the Camera app could remove unwanted lens flares from images.

For iPadOS 15, Apple made changes to multitasking to make it more usable, along with adding home screen widget support, system-wide Quick Note, and the Translate app. Swift Playgrounds also enables app development on the iPad, complete with submissions of apps to the App Store.

Alongside the other releases, Apple also made available a new HomePod software beta through it's restricted AppleSeed testing program.

Both AppleInsider and Apple itself strongly advise users don't install the betas on to "mission-critical" or primary devices, as there is the remote possibility of data loss or other issues. Instead, testers should install betas onto secondary or non-essential devices, and to make sure there are sufficient backups of important data before updating.
