'Hot Wheels: Rift Rally' game offers mixed-reality racing on iPhone

Hot Wheels: Rift Rally

"Hot Wheels: Rift Rally" is an upcoming iPhone mixed-reality game that transforms physical spaces into digital racetracks for a remote-controlled car.

The game has physical "gates" or arches that gamers place onto the floor in their home to build a race track. They then race the Chameleon RC car using an iPhone or PlayStation controller. The companion app overlays digital elements onto the environment on the screen as the car moves around.

The Chameleon RC car can be digitally transformed into over 140 vehicle configurations, including iconic models such as "Twin Mill," "Bone Shaker," "Gotta Go," and "Mach Speeder."

In Campaign mode, players set up Rift Gates to create a mixed-reality track and explore different maps with multiple challenges and races to complete. Then, in Stunt mode, players drive and stunt the Chameleon without gates as they chain together drifts, wheelies, and burnouts to hit high scores and earn rewards.

"Velan Studios' innovative game design and technology introduces a breakthrough play experience for Hot Wheels fans by transforming their home into the ultimate Hot Wheels track for their digital car collection," said Mike DeLaet, Global Head of Digital Gaming, Mattel.

The mixed reality game kits are available to preorder now and will launch along with the app on March 14. The Standard Edition costs $129.99, and the Collector's Edition is $149.99.

The Chameleon RC car, four Rift Gates for track building, and a charging cable are included with the purchase. The Collector's Edition includes a special edition Chameleon with black deco and gold accents and a limited edition McLaren Senna Hot Wheels die-cast car in a display case.
