Apple has updated its Podcasts app with more discovery options, including adding nine subcategories to the Search tab and the option to explore podcasts by language.
Detailed by Apple Podcasts for Creators on Tuesday, the Podcasts app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS has undergone some small changes that can help the discoverability of shows in smaller yet important categories.
Under the Search tab, Apple has added nine subcategories across a range of subjects. The list consists of:
- Mental Health
- Relationships
- Self-Improvement
- Personal Journals
- Entrepreneurship
- Documentary
- Parenting
- Books
- Language Learning
Each subcategory also has its own charts, revealing the top shows and top episodes within the user's market. For example, charts for Mental Health will show the top 200 podcasts and top 200 episodes available in the United States for a U.S.-based listener.
The nine subcategories and the 19 main categories have also been updated with new artwork and recommendations, such as curated Apple Podcast Essentials that list the all-time favorite podcasts. New & Noteworthy shows, Shows of the Month, Feature Channels and Creators, and Global Highlights will also be surfaced in each category.
To help users find what they need in a particular language, users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia can now look through Podcasts by Language. This feature recommends popular shows in over 20 languages.

Adding more categories really doesn’t make up for the fact that the basic functionality of the app is subpar. I use it regularly mostly because it would be too much of a pain in the rear to export all of my usage / listening history to another app (and also I’m fully invested in the Apple ecosystem).
Just play downloaded podcasts in order without stopping and complaining Mobile Data is turned off!
Did they add bookmarks? Or can it already and the feature is just hidden by a gesture like 80% of the Camera app features?
