Roblox rebrands as 'experience' creation platform amid Epic Games v. Apple trial

Roblox now defines itself as a massively popular "experience" creation tool, rather than gaming platform, after the distinction came up in the ongoing Epic Games v. Apple trial.

Over the past few days, Roblox has combed through its website and replaced the word "game" with "experience." A tab that once read "Games" now says "Discover," and the company has replaced the word "player" with "people." This all appears to be in response to the ongoing Epic Games v. Apple trial, according to The Verge

In its arguments, Apple wants to prove that "Fortnite" is a game and that Epic Games is a game-making company. Doing so will allow it to defend its App Store rules as consistent across categories, and will also shore up defenses of its ban on cloud gaming services.

Epic Games, on the other hand, has been attempting to prove that "Fortnite" is a "metaverse" or "experience," rather than a game. That's because this would push the scope of the trial from games apps to the entire App Store.

That's where "Roblox" comes in. The platform has blurred the line between a game and a game engine, since players enter individual experience created by users rather than a shared world. There are, in fact, game studios that build entire games within Roblox.

Back in 2017, that murkiness had Apple concerned. Apple senior App Review director Trystan Kosmynka said he was "surprised" that "Roblox" had been approved. Epic Games brought up the approval in court, hoping to poke holes in Apple's review process.

However, Kosmynka defended the approval by claiming that "Roblox" — and experiences within it — are not games.

"If you think of a game or app, games are incredibly dynamic, games have a beginning, an end, there's challenges in place. I look at the experiences that are in Roblox similar to the experiences that are in Minecraft. These are maps. These are worlds. And they have boundaries in terms of what they're capable of," he said.

He went on to argue that experiences built within "Roblox" weren't games because they were contained within the sandbox of the actual app, which Apple had approved.

That's important, because Apple bars third-party app stores and doesn't allow cloud gaming services that package multiple titles within a single app. Epic Games has hammered the Cupertino tech giant on this point during the trial.

Other debates between the two companies centered on rules that bar developers from advertising about non-iOS platforms and whether or not iOS users play "Fortnite" on other devices.

The distinction is clearly that each “game” or “experience” cannot be bought individually on any platform. If “people” purchased “experiences” in Roblox then Apple’s opinion would I feel be different.

Neener neener neener ner, flippin kids boy...  I think the only thing I have to say, is:

Look if Apple wants to take it's ball and go home, what the Feds have to come in and say:
"No, you're playing!"  and "You can't pick and choose who to play with or who your friends are."

It's just almost like you can't even make a successful business.
It's not like this took Apple 10 years to accomplish and now they are crushing everything that moves (FBook).
This took Apple over 40 years to get where they are.

It's just "dereliction of terms" over and over in these courts, that they want to DEFINE things and labels,
and they all feel like they can solve and they must solve them now for every use case.
This is just for themselves to be the ones who create the terms and/or labels,
that in this country because of "precedence."  We all lose, unless we're FIRST or somewhat first.
That's the dumb machine until the industries get all locked in and too rigid, adding in even the patents and such.
Until a new industry has to be created or re-created.

It's like just live but then jealousy...

Actually, I will say one more thing:

Think about this:

What if Epic ONLY made Fortnite for Google Play, Android, Xbox, PS4/5, and Windows
and they DID NOT make the game for macOS/Apple and the App Store, etc.

Could Apple have sewed Epic, demanding them to COMPILE for "their platform?"

But no, game developers for YEEEEAAARS!! have always decided to NOT write a VERSION for Apple's ecosystem!

That's the BS!  If Apple says take a hike, then take a F#®king HIKE!

You write your code and we'll write our code, it's a game you're in.  You don't like that well too bad!
