Man murdered after girlfriend used AirTag to investigate cheating

Andre Smith was hit multiple times by a car outside Tilly's Pub in Indianapolis on Friday, with emergency services discovering him under the vehicle. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead by medics on the scene, with the coroner's office determining the car was the cause of death.

A witness said they were told by the driver, Gaylyn Morris, that Smith was tracked using an AirTag and GPS, reports IndyStar. Morris claimed she was the girlfriend of Smith, and believed that he was cheating on her.

Tracking Smith down and seeing him speaking to a woman at the bar, Morris allegedly picked up an empty bottle and threatened to beat up the woman. Smith prevented Morris from hitting the other woman and tried to get between the women, before the bar asked the three to leave.

A witness told police Morris got in her car and pulled forward, knocking Smith over. She then reversed the car over Smith, then pulled forward over him for a third hit. Morris then exited the vehicle to attack the woman, but officers arrived and arrested her.

Morris has been preliminarily charged with murder, with final charges yet to be determined.

Apple's AirTag has been the subject of controversy since its introduction, with would-be stalkers using the device to track victims, despite Apple including various anti-stalking measures. Its misuse has prompted lawmakers to look into the tracking tag market, and in some cases, have put forward bills to try and prevent their use as stalking devices.
