Electric vehicle maker Polestar beats Tesla to Apple CarPlay

An over-the-air update to the Polestar 2 is upgrading the in-car infotainment system with full CarPlay compatibility.

A replacement interface for its heads-up display will be made available for iPhone users, Polestar announced in a tweet Wednesday.

According to the company, this will allow the car's driver or passengers to "change music, use apps, and communicate through Siri" with an iPhone connected.

Polestar was purchased by by Volvo Cars in 2015, with it spun off into EV-only production in 2017. The company leverages technology and manufacturing from Volvo Cars.

Manufacturing for Polestar is mostly in China at the moment. An expansion into US manufacturing is expected in the next few years.

Apple CarPlay was first announced in 2013 as "iOS in the Car," and was first redesigned in 2019.

The company announced a revamp to CarPlay. The new version will supply the interface for the entire dashboard, including for the speedometer.

The upgrade announced at WWDC isn't coming until 2023 at the earliest.

I was under the impression that Tesla had no desire to use CarPlay so I don’t know how they were “beat”.

Elon Musk said it himself, he wants to create an os built entirely by Tesla, for Tesla, and eventually built on a Tesla original code. Also the Tesla os will be run by their own “dojo” program. Not once did they think of using CarPlay to replace their own os.

They were "beat" because they are one of the very few car manufacturers that don't support CarPlay today.

Personally, I will not even consider a car that doesn't have CarPlay -- and that is one of many reasons I don't plan to buy a Tesla.
