Which MacBook is right for you?
If you're in the market for a new MacBook, now is the perfect time to buy. Apple recently introduced a new lineup of Macs running custom Apple Silicon, and they beat out all but the best pro laptops.
M3 MacBook Pro
In late 2023 Apple announced the newest upgrades to their Apple Silicon chips, the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, debuting inside their latest 14" and 16" MacBook Pro offerings in standard shades of Silver and Space Gray.
The M3 MacBook Pro outperforms many of the best laptops currently on the market. With the discontinuation of the 13" M2 MacBook Pro, the 14" M3 also becomes the smallest default pro-sized option that Apple offers.
The base model M3 MacBook Pro starts at $1,449 comes with an 8-core CPU, and up to 10-core GPU. The M3 Pro gets a slight bump up to a 12-core CPU, and a 14 or 18-core GPU. The M3 Max ostensibly doubles the power of the base model chip with a 16-core CPU and 30 or 40-core GPU. The M3 is up to 50% faster than the M1 chip.
The 14" and 16" MacBook Pros both come with a Liquid Retina XDR Display, new ports including a return to Apple's beloved MagSafe charger, three Thunderbolt 4 ports (also USB-C compatible), an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack, as well as support for one 8k monitor. Users can get up to a 50% charge in about 30 minutes with an upgrade to Apple's fast charging adapter, which comes standard with the 16" M3.
M2 MacBook Air
In 2023 Apple updated the MacBook Air line with 13" and 15" options, both powered by the M2 chip. They both perform faster than previous M1 MacBook Air laptops and feature up to 18 hours of battery life. Making it a perfect choice for students or folks who need a powerful traveling laptop.
The MacBook Air is fanless, so it runs with almost no noise, it has a width of just 0.44 inches, and storage options ranging from 256GB-2TB SSD, and 8GB, 16GB, or 24GB RAM. The M2 MacBook Air lineup features four distinctive colors including Space Gray, Silver, Starlight, and Midnight, and retains standard MacBook features like the Magic Keyboard with a row of function keys at the top instead of the touch-bar seen on previous models, and Liquid Retina Display capable of supporting up to a billion colors.
13" M2 MacBook Pro
Apple also refreshed the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 processor in 2022. The base 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro configuration with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD storage costs $1,299. Though deals are available on these recently discontinued MacBooks.
The portable MacBook Pro has a touch-bar instead of the standard row of function keys, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and can run one external display. Customers can configure up to 24GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage maxing out the price at $2,499.
Closeout deals on M1 MacBook Pro
The MacBook Pro received a refresh in 2021 with the option to choose between the M1 Pro, with a 10-Core CPU and 16-Core GPU, or the M1 Max, with a 10-Core CPU and 32-Core GPU. Both feature a dazzling 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID capability, and the Force Touch trackpad. Apple updated its largest MacBook with M-series processors in the form of both the M1 Pro or M1 Max, two configurations for users to choose from depending on their needs.
Although these models are technically discontinued, the M1 chip should stay compatible with future software updates and is still a powerful option even for pro-level users. Closeout deals on the M1 lineup are some of the biggest MacBook Pro discounts available and are a great way to get an affordable deal on Apple laptops with upgraded specs. Sales on M1 models with 32GB and 64GB RAM, are super attractive to folks who might otherwise be relegated to options that are far less powerful.
The large screen, three Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, and M1 Pro or M1 Max processors make this an amazing professional laptop. All of this comes at a cost, however, as the starting price for a base 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro configuration is $2,399 (although deals are regularly available). Currently there is a deal for the 14" M1 Max with 32C GPU, 64GB RAM, and a 2TB SSD for $2,699 ($1,400 off) at B&H.
There are options up to 64GB of RAM and 8TB of storage. A maxed out 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max model at the time of release could cost up to $5,899.
