Which MacBook is right for you?

If you're in the market for a new MacBook, now is the perfect time to buy. Apple recently introduced a new lineup of Macs running custom Apple Silicon, and they beat out all but the best pro laptops. If you're dependent on Intel-based apps and workflows, however, you may want to find a discounted older model that works with your needs.

MacBook Air with M1 processor

Apple introduced the MacBook Air with M1 processor in late 2020. It performs up to 3.5x faster than its Intel variant with six more hours of battery life.

The efficiency of Apple's custom processor allows the MacBook Air to be fanless. The laptop will operate silently without overheating thanks to a set of efficiency cores more powerful than Intel's i3 processor. When necessary, the M1 can kick in its high-performance cores to speed up processes.

Apple didn't change much else about the new MacBook Air when it released. Its exterior design is identical to the early 2020 model and retains features like the Magic Keyboard and Retina Display.

13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 processor

Apple also refreshed the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 processor in late 2020. The base 13-inch MacBook Pro configuration with a 256GB SSD costs $1,299, ringing in as the same entry price as the Intel 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The portable MacBook Pro has two Thunderbolt 3 ports and can run one external display. Customers can configure up to 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage in the M1 machines, maxing out the price at $2,299.

Apple still sells the 13-inch configuration with an Intel processor for those who need to perform legacy tasks. These Intel MacBook Pros can be configured with up to 32GB of memory and 4TB of storage. Retail prices top out at $3,599, though AppleInsider exclusive deals are available to bring the cost down.

16-inch MacBook Pro

The 16-inch MacBook Pro finally received a refresh in 2021 with the option to choose between the M1 Pro, with a 10-Core CPU and 16-Core GPU, or the M1 Max, with a 10-Core CPU and 32-Core GPU. Both feature a dazzling 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID capability, and the Force Touch trackpad. Apple updated its largest MacBook with M-series processors in the form of both the M1 Pro or M1 Max, two configurations for users to choose from depending on their needs.

The large screen, three Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, and M1 Pro or M1 Max processors make this an amazing professional laptop. All of this comes at a cost, however, as the starting price for a base 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro configuration is $2,499 (although deals are regularly available).

The M1 Pro and M1 Max system on a chip boosts performance in several metrics and allow users to connect up to a 6K external display.

There are options up to 64GB of RAM and 8TB of storage. A maxed out 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max model could cost up to $6,099.

Users who prefer professional power while running Intel-based apps can still pick up the 16-inch MacBook Pro, however. Apple upgraded this series in late 2021, but the Intel variant will continue to be supported for years to come if that's the model you choose to purchase.
