Which MacBook Pro is right for you?
Apple offers two models of the MacBook Pro. They use the M4 family of processors spread across the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The latest MacBook Pro models boast significant improvements in graphics performance over previous generations, ensuring a superior visual and gaming experiences for users.
Both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature three Thunderbolt ports regardless of chipset chosen. The base M4 has Thunderbolt 4 while M4 Pro and M4 Max has Thunderbolt 5 ports.
Consider the processor
Choosing the right MacBook Pro starts with choosing which processor will be needed. The M4 is only available in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, while the M4 Pro and M4 Max are available in both the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.
M4 has an 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU that can be configured with up to 32GB of unified memory. Dynamic Caching enables more impressive graphical processing like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh mapping.
The M4 Pro has two configuration options. The base chip has an 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU while the upgraded version has a 14-core CPU and a 20-core GPU. It supports up to 48GB of RAM and 4TB SSD.
M4 Max takes things even further with a 14-core CPU and 32-core GPU for serious speed. It can be upgraded with a 16-core CPU, a 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB of RAM and 8TB of storage.
Once you know which processor is needed, choose the right sized MacBook.
2024 MacBook Pro 14-inch with M4, M4 Pro or M4 Max chip
The late 2024 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro take over as the new high-end models for pro customers. Since the smaller 14-inch model starts at $1,599, these are not for the casual or budget-conscious consumer.
The 14-inch's Liquid Retina XDR Display combines all of Apple's latest display technologies in one package. It houses a mini-LED backlight, high mobility oxide TFT for 120Hz refresh, and a 1,600 nit peak brightness HDR, 1,000 nit peak brightness SDR panel.
The 14-inch is smaller and lighter, so much easier to lug around. However, you’ll be trading off some battery life and display size for that portability. While this is the most portable of the two, the smaller display may leave you wanting an external monitor for more heavy-duty tasks like video editing or coding.
The M4 Pro and M4 Max models start at $1,999 and have all the same features as the larger 16-inch model. It has three Thunderbolt 5 ports for future-proof connectivity.
Choose the lower-priced M4 model and get three Thunderbolt 4 ports with the ability to connect to two external displays. This model replaces the 13-inch MacBook Pro from previous generations.
