Sling TV to get HBO live and on-demand content days after HBO Now lands on Apple TV [u]

Last updated

As promised at the start of April, Dish Network's Web-based television service Sling TV will add HBO to its list of partner providers later this week, offering linear and video-on-demand content to paying customers.

Update: HBO is now live for Sling subscribers. Those who add HBO will have access to three streams of HBO content at no extra cost, in addition to the single-stream dedicated to its core and add-on packages.

Accessing HBO through Sling TV will come as a $15 monthly add-on to the service's core $20-per-month package, which includes programming from ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, El Rey, Maker, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Galavision, CNN, and ABC Family. Along with select set-top boxes, the company has an iOS app for on-the-go viewing.

Sling TV debuted in February as an over-the-top subscription-based streaming service providing cord cutters a more flexible alternative to cable.

At its "Spring Forward" event in March, Apple announced a similar content partnership with HBO that netted exclusive Apple TV and iOS device access to HBO Now for $14.99 per month. The subscription service launched on Tuesday.

Today's news is just the latest development in what has become a broad industry push into Internet TV, or services that eschew traditional cable bundles for Web-based delivery to set-top streamers, mobile devices and connected TVs.

It was reported in March that Apple was in talks with major service providers to supply content for its own branded service to be launched later this year, presumably on Apple TV, iOS and Mac devices. According to recent rumors, Apple is looking to focus on hardware and software for the unannounced service, leaving content providers to deal with backend infrastructure.
