This week on the AppleInsider Podcast, Victor and William talk through the latest news about Project Titan rumors, ARM Macbook rumors, and the strange case of the teenager who took 90GB of data from Apple.

  • Welcome to another week of dashing William's hopes and dreams!
  • This week, we discuss the Apple Car, and analyst Ming Chi Quo's bet that it results in an actual available car in about 5 years, contributing to Apple growth to a 2 Trillion USD, knowing that we've just passed the 1T mark. This is a big bet. William just wants a car, and we get into Victor's prediction that car ownership is changing, and talk about the Bird scooters littered about his town.
  • Berkshire Hathaway increases ownership of Apple stock by 5 percent, or about 5 Billion dollars worth.
  • Apple is getting into vital sign monitoring and increasing hires for sensor development.
  • Apple is potentially working on a new inexpensive laptop. Couple that with the idea that the Macbook and Macbook Air are long in tooth, and that we've had an ARM Macbook rumor for ages, just as ARM has released their roadmap for the first time ever, and it looks like it hints at laptops. Maybe we're thinking of it wrongly, but an ARM Macbook seems interesting.
  • An Australian teenager hacked Apple's network and took 90 gigabytes of data. At the time of recording, we weren't sure what was in the data, so we speculated. After having recorded, Apple released a statement saying that no customer information was compromised.

I'd really like to see an Apple car but I do wonder a number of things. Will be branded "Apple Car", or have its own brand name entirely. I also don't quite see how Apple would make such a huge amount of money just selling cars, or perhaps MPVs or other styles of vehicles. I really notice how peoples interaction and association with cars has changed over the past couple of years. I'm British but live in Berlin. New firms like DriveNow (Mini & BMW), Ubeequ, (VW), Car2Go (Smart & Mercedes) are all entering the "use when you need" in varies guises. Those in their 20s and 30s are embracing these systems and their scooter equivalent. With attitudes changing Apple will need to be very aware and careful where and how it enters this market. I'm no specialist in this field but mistakes here could cost the company dearly, but I still don't see how it would make huge margins in a sector known, to my knowledge, for very slim margins. If this remains a slim margin sector and these company's like BMW/Audi produce autonomous cars that people are already aware of to "using when required" I feel Apple has a big job ahead. It's certainly going to be interesting.

Hmm... 90 GB of data and Australia. That must have taken a while.
Or, was it like some of the other somewhat recent data breaches, where the perpetrator supposedly took some obscene amount of data in just minutes over some imaginary non-existent internet connection (i.e.: thumb-drive)?

It will definitely have the white Apple logo on the car. :) And 95% of the cars will be white with white interiors. :)

I look at it a little differently. What Apple was able to do with the tiny size of the iPhone is astounding.

Basically, make a computer that fits in your pocket that's a thousand times more powerful than computers used on the Apollo rockets that went to the moon. 

Now imagine what they'll be able to fit inside something the size of a, say, Prius! :)

I'd love to drive up to my home and automatically have the garage door open up. Or pull over and have the 12" screen on the dashboard turn into my iPadPro.

With permission, of course, it could be mapping and streaming weather/traffic conditions in real time. It could be your iPhone where with just an AppleWatch you could open it and start it. The features Apple could include are infinite!

I look at the interiors of Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari and Lexus and it seems they see value in having as many buttons as possible on the dash and steering wheel. As though that's the measure of value. I call it the 'Duesenberg/Hindenburg Syndrome!' :)

Anyway, great podcast. Enjoy William's take on things ("I'll put the kettle on." B/c that's the first step in solving any problem!) and Victor always does a great job keeping the conversation lively! :)

Drivers actually require tactile "buttons" to operate features of the vehicle safely without having to much more than glance at the dash. Controls on the steering wheel remove more distractions, and provide efficiency,  a preference of performance drivers who just happen to prefer cars such as Porsche, et al.

A fully autonomous car, which doesn't exist in production and won't anytime soon, would be fine with a display without any buttons. The display on the Tesla Model 3, is in my opinion, awful in both configuration and in operation, but, YMMV.
