2020 iPad predicted to use A12 processor

Last updated

Backing up previous reports of an iPad refresh coming in 2020, a leaker says that the expected eighth-generation iPad will now run on an A12 processor, compared to the A10 in the current model.

10.2-inch iPad

Following previous leaks concerning forthcoming Apple devices, Twitter user @L0vetodream now says that an upcoming refresh will see Apple's lowest-cost iPad gain an A12 processor.

The claim follows the report from Ming-Chi Kuo that says a new 10.8-inch iPad will be released in the second half of the year. His report did not specify whether the model will be an iPad Air 4 or the regular iPad. However, he did say that both it and a forthcoming iPad mini would feature "fast chips."

The current iPad Air has a 10.5-inch display, while the regular iPad's screen is 10.2-inches. Kuo says the new iPad and iPad mini will resemble the iPhone SE in how they will be affordable, but feature faster processors than before.

The iPad mini already has an A12. So does this mean an A13?

Nope. The budget iPad will get A12. The next iPad Air and iPad Mini will get A13.

Ming Chi-Kuo predicts that the next iPads will have "fast chips"? OMG now I totally see why people believe his predictions so slavishly! /s

But slightly more seriously, this new wannabe says that the next entry-level iPad will get a better chip than it has now? Well this fellow's certain to be the next Ming-Chi! LOL

If Apple follows from its past patterns then the line up will likely be

iPad A12 Touch ID (perhaps in-display Touch ID)
iPad mini A14 in-display Touch ID
iPad Air A14 in-display Touch ID
iPad Pros A14X Face ID with possible in-display Touch ID back-up

Both the Air and the mini got the A12 when the iPad Pros got the 12X
