iOS 16 deep-dive, iPhone custom Lock Screens, and iPad Stage Manager, on the AppleInsider podcast

By Stephen Robles

It's time to go in-depth on new features across iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, plus Stage Manager in iPadOS 16, and just what desktop-class apps could mean on M1 iPads, all on the new AppleInsider podcast.

Apple's iOS 16 contains numerous updates to Messages, Wallet, and notably, the ability to customize the iPhone lock screen. In the current beta, custom widgets on the lock screen are iPhone only, though, and the iPad lock screen has yet to gain the same features.

There are, though, many features that Apple failed to mention at the WWDC keynote, including the ability to finally use Face ID on iPhone in landscape mode. Also only alluded to was how deleted Messages threads are placed in a recently deleted area for 30 days, and the ability to edit or undo iMessages is limited to 15 minutes after being sent.

Copy Subject from an image is a powerful new feature that works in Photos and when viewing images on the web. Users can tap and hold on the subject in a photo to drag them elsewhere without background content, creating a new PNG file with the subject only.

Diving further into iPadOS 16, there is the new Weather app plus Stage Manager for M1 iPad devices. Stage Manager allows users to manage multiple, overlapping windows on iPad, with up to eight windows simultaneously when using an external display. Apple also claims desktop-class apps are coming to iPad, but features such as multiple apps accessing a USB device are still unavailable.

Next, it appears that Apple will use its own money to finance purchases made through the new Apple Pay Later. It's not because Apple is feeling generous.
