On this week's AppleInsider Podcast, Apple launches its self service repair program, a beta firmware update slightly improves the Studio Display FaceTime camera, Apple Podcasts adds new collections, and there are new iOS and watchOS WWDC rumors.
Apple's new Self Service Repair program is now live. Users can download PDF manuals to repair iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE models, but comparing the cost of parts to AppleCare+, self-repair may be less appealing than users think. Some repairs may require the rental of a 79-pound toolkit that users will need to send back to Apple.
Also out this week is a new firmware update that is available for Studio Display owners. The update is built-in to macOS 12.4 beta 3.
After testing the FaceTime camera update, it's true that there are noticeable improvements to skin tone reproduction and background noise in low-light conditions. However, despite these improvements, we discuss the trade-off of Apple using an ultra-wide camera in the Studio Display instead of a higher-end 12MP lens.
Looking further ahead, reports from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman claim that upcoming Apple Watch models may support satellite communications. We discuss the likelihood and use case for satellite connectivity on Apple Watch, plus cover new rumors for iOS 16, watchOS 9, and macOS 13.

Well, my personal monitor update is that Apple again pushed the delivery back. From April 7-14, to April 22-29, and now to May 20 to 25. I really don’t see what this major problem is. I know supply issues are real, but many have already received theirs. I made my order just ten minutes after the store reopened. And twice Apple said they were preparing to ship, which is the second stage, then went back to the first stage of, processing your order. That’s very strange.
Thank you guys so much for hitting so many of my pet peeves in one episode. The inconsistency in Podcasts Playing Next queues has been driving me nuts, I noticed it dropped queues after App Resume (when you've switched away for a while) but I also use Downloaded and it can't hold a queue there either so it just defaults to previous episodes. Not sure about free-form widgets but I'm with you on Slide Over - it should be where all iPhone-only format Apps reside on both macOS & iPadOS. I love hand-off but not brush-off (if I ask Siri to set a timer with my phone, the HomePod shouldn't pick it up) so if I'm using a device it should prioritise all activity to it not just notifications.
I'm going with Santa Cruz as the next macOS (homepage to Unix?)
