All about tvOS 27

Apple held a particularly unusual WWDC on June 8, 2026. tvOS 27 was an afterthought, but it still received some updates that affect Apple TV and HomePod.

Apple Intelligence upgrades were the focus for iOS 27 and the rest. Some elements apply to tvOS, like the ability to see captions on videos captured on iPhone in the Photos app.

While the new AI features aren't going to run directly on Apple TV, some aspects do appear for the platform. AutoMix is improved for Apple Music and HomeKit Secure Video gains 4K video support.

tvOS 27 will be revealed during WWDC 2026 on June 8, though little is known about what will be included in that release. Rumors point to Apple focusing on stability with its group of OS 27 updates, but big changes could be coming to Apple Intelligence.

The Apple TV operating system, tvOS, is built by secretive teams that don't share anything outside of those closed doors. Leaks tend to occur when alpha builds begin being distributed in December or January, but even then, such leaks are rare.

Considering the simple nature of tvOS, there likely won't be many significant updates coming to the platform. New Aerial Screensavers are always a possibility, plus updates to user account systems.

Apple Intelligence isn't a part of tvOS, but it soon could be thanks to the rumored Home Hub being added to Apple Home.

tvOS 27 features

Apple's operating systems don't leak, generally. There's the occasional alpha build that gets out, but even those only provide so much information ahead of time.

tvOS 27 could be a minor release, but it depends on hardware updates

A lot can be extrapolated from rumors and existing hardware. The Apple TV and both HomePod models are due for an update, plus, the new Home Hub tablet could be released at any time.

The tablet device would act as the brains of your Apple Home and likely run some variation of tvOS. Future models are even expected to have onboard Apple Intelligence for some operations. So, while Apple TV isn't exactly a place where on-device AI makes a lot of sense, its broader device ecosystem could benefit from upgrade Apple Foundation Models.

tvOS 26.4 also has a new Genius feature that can recommend things to watch based on the viewer's history. While this is seemingly a simple algorithm, AI could easily play a part in the Genius feature in future updates.

Apple won't reveal any details about tvOS 27 until WWDC on June 8, 2026. Even then, it may not be given much time during the presentation, as it tends to be a rather minor update.
