Apple held its "Time Flies" event and announced the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, new iPad 8th generation, iPad Air and new services including Apple Fitness+. Here's the recap of all the details in this AppleInsider Podcast special report in under 15 minutes.
Apple's new iPad Air lineup
During Tuesday's "Time Flies" Apple event, the Apple Watch Series 6 was announced that includes a brighter always-on display, blood oxygen sensor, and the new "solo loop" watch band that is a single piece of silicon.
There is a more affordable Apple Watch SE that starts at $279. Along side that, Apple announced a new Family Setup feature.
With that Family Setup feature, parents can now setup an Apple Watch for children or family members with a separate phone number and iCloud account, but connect to their phone. Communication restrictions and "school time" features give parents greater control over the child's Apple Watch.
Apple announced a new Fitness+ service that connects your Apple Watch to video workouts available on Apple TV, iPad and iPhone. Starting a new workout in Apple Fitness+ will display your heart rate, calories, and Activity rings on the TV or device the user is watching.
The Apple One services bundle was announced that includes a $14.95 individual plan with Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and 50GB of iCloud storage, up to the "Premiere" package that adds Apple News+ and Fitness+ for $29.95 a month. The "Premiere" package can be shared across six family members.
Apple then announced a refreshed iPad 8th generation which now comes with the A12 Bionic processor. Much of the entry-level iPad remains the same including the 10.2-inch screen and lightning port.
The iPad Air design has been updated to mirror the iPad Pro hardware. While the new iPad Air does not come with Promotion or Face ID, a new Touch ID sensor is now located in the sleep button. The new iPad Air is also compatible with the newer Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard.
This iPad Air is also the first Apple device to ship with the new A14 Bionic processor. At a staggering 5 nanometer design, this SoC brings a 40% increase in performance over the previous iPad Air.
At the end of the presentation, CEO Tim Cook announced that iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7 and tvOS 14 will be released tomorrow, September 16.
