Logitech Circle 2 security camera ships in July with incoming Apple HomeKit support

Last updated

Logitech has unveiled the Circle 2, the follow-up to the Circle connected camera, with the second-generation security device adding weatherproofing and using a more versatile design, as well as supporting Apple's HomeKit home automation platform in a future software update.

The Circle 2 is a 1080p HD home security camera, with a wide-angle lens offering a field of view of up to 180 degrees. Able to stream over a local Wi-Fi network, the camera provides night vision capabilities for low-light situations, as well as offering the ability for users to communicate with people in its view with its two-way talk feature.

Two versions of the Circle 2 will be available, with the wired model drawing power from an outlet. The wire-free version is said to work for up to three months on a single charge from its rechargeable battery, though it is unclear if this means three months on standby or in active use.

A selection of accessories are being offered for the device, allowing it to be used both indoors and out. For example, window and plug mounts allow the camera to be placed in a window or at a power outlet, and a weatherproof case protects the cables of the wired version from the elements.

Logitech includes 24-hours of free encrypted cloud storage for the Circle 2, with users able to subscribe for more capacity. The Circle Safe Basic plan for $3.99 per camera per month offers 14 days of storage, while Circle Safe Premium ups this to 31 days, while also adding extra features like custom motion zones and person detection for $9.99 per camera per month, or $99.99 per year.

The Circle companion app can be used to view a feed from the camera, as well as to configure detection areas and to power smart alerts when these are triggered. Advanced Event Filtering can identify and record motion so users can replay the clips later, and the app's Smart Time-Lapse Day Brief compiles a 30-second recap of the day's events.

It will also work with other smart home platforms, with it including integrations with Amazon Alexa for controlling settings and to start recordings, as well as Logitech's own Pop Smart Button. The Circle 2 will also work with HomeKit in the future, with a software update for the imaging device adding support for Apple's smart home platform.

Logitech has made the Circle 2 available to pre-order now with shipments expected from July. The Circle 2 Wired costs $179.99, the Circle 2 Wire-Free is $199.99, and the mounts and accessories range from $29.99 to $49.99.

Getting a little tired of things Supporting HomeKit "in the future"

I love everything about these cameras EXCEPT, if you have four cameras, for example, and you want them to tell the difference between a burglar and your dog, you'll be paying $10/month per camera X 4 cameras X 12 months = $480/year! Same thing if you want to use the "motion zone" feature. So disappointing that these are premium features -- it looks like they made all of the right choices on the product side but are really greedy on the monitoring side: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/circle-2-home-security-camera/page/circle-2-safe#plans
