Jony Ive left Apple to start a design company, and one of his most high-profile jobs so far is designing an EV Ferrari inside and out. Needless to say, it'll be a controversial vehicle.

LoveFrom was formed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson in 2019 shortly after Ive's Apple departure. The two were fairly quickly contacted by Ferrari, with a deal being formalized in 2021.

Five years later, the results of this partnership have finally been unveiled in the form of the Ferrari Luce.

LoveFrom worked on both the interior and exterior of the all-new Ferrari Luce. The inside of the car is a unique mix of new and old, offering an OLED center display alongside physical switches and an analog-style clock. Its instrument cluster consists of vintage-style gauges that are actually displays within another display.

The exterior of the Ferrari Luce, however, leaves a lot to be desired, in our view. Though it reflects creative decisions by Jony Ive and Marc Newson, the car doesn't have much of its manufacturer's DNA, at least design-wise.

As noted by Car and Driver, the Ferrari Luce's form factor is unlike any other Ferrari. With four center-opening doors and a trunk, all on a light blue car, it's easy to see why it doesn't exactly scream Ferrari, to say the least.

Though opinions will vary, the Luce looks more like a Lotus Elise redesigned for the EV era rather than a modern-day Ferrari. In other respects, it offers stylistic cues reminiscent of early-2000s computer peripherals, such as curved forms with black surfaces.

The headlights of the Ferrari Luce are just two strips, meaning the car follows existing trends rather than setting new ones. It's easy to argue that the vehicle won't become as iconic as Ive's other designs, such as the original iPod, iPhone, or iMac G3.

Though the Luce has a drag coefficient lower than that of any Ferrari, with front and rear spoilers, it looks practically nothing like a Ferrari. If anything, the vehicle gives us an idea of what the scrapped Apple Car project may have looked like under Jony Ive's direction.

Time will tell whether the Ferrari Luce will turn out to be as big a flop as the Jaguar Type 00, which led to the departure of its designer from the company.

Styling aside, the all-electric four-door Ferrari Luce is priced at approximately $640,000, based on its 550,000 euro price. It's set to debut in Europe later in 2026. Car enthusiasts in the United States will have to wait until the second quarter of 2027 to purchase the vehicle, and its U.S. price has not yet been disclosed.

Aside from the Ferrari Luce, Jony Ive is also working on a physical AI-themed product in partnership with OpenAI. It remains to be seen when that device will debut, however, or what it will look like.
